LAMBERT: Thank you and … let’s get started with the questions. What is Mardi Gras ? FONTENOT: Mardi Gras, in French, means “Fat Tuesday” in English. It’s a big celebration where people drink too much beer and whiskey; there’s a lot of dancing and letting the good times roll and acting mischievous, sometimes doing bad stuff, often eating too much. The Mardi Gras have a lot of fun and drink a lot during the two or three days leading up to Lent. During the 40 days of Lent, Catholics especially encourage people to make sacrifices and fast and not eat meat on Fridays … I made other sacrifices, like not eating cake or candy… also, doing penance and [2:16] praying more. For us, it was the Way of the Cross, just like the 40 days Jesus Christ spent in the désert … I don’t know how to say “désert.”
FONTENOT: Okay. And the courir was just a group of men dressed in pretty colors like violet and green and yellow which are often handmade… they wore ugly, scary masks and big pointy hats. We call that a capuchon. They ride horses with their beers and their flasks of whiskey in groups of ten or… of 15 or 20 people and they choose a captaine who carries a white flag. The group of men rode on horseback to every farmer’s house in the countryside, with an accordion player who would sing and play the Mardi Gras song. The captaine went first, asking permission for the Mardi Gras to sing and dance and beg a little for something to make the gumbo that night, maybe a chicken or some oil or flour, corncobs or cracklins.
FONTENOT And the village of Eunice, where we lived, had a courir for the kids on Sunday afternoon. I took two or three pictures of my grandkids dressed in their Mardi [4:56] Gras costumes, running in the courir, between 1964 and 1966. I bought the fabric and made the costumes myself. And their Dad was a chaperone for the parade downtown. Our kids rode with the other Mardi Gras behind a truck, and then they walked a few blocks down Main Street. We went for the Mardi Gras gumbo and the children’s dance at night. They had contests for the young Mardi Gras and they won a prizes in three categories: best outfit, ugliest outfit and scariest outfit. We all had a lot of fun with the kids.
FONTENOT: Women didn’t participate in the big courir. But, women, like the kids, had their own courir on Sunday afternoon in the… between Eunice and Mamou. I only saw a few of them late in the afternoon coming back to town. But, they were dressed in Mardi Gras costumes just like the men, doing the same thing.

I don’t know how to say “desert.” LAMBERT: C’est okay … et les parades ?
FONTENOT: Okay.
It’s my … it’s in my DNA. It’s in my soul. It’s in the end of my toes et je l’aime beaucoup.
